Mauritius Joins the Global Self-Storage Revolution - Share

An interesting look at the phenomenal growth of self-storage worldwide – and now in Mauritius. Multibox is the island's leading supplier of self-storage space, with three self-storage facilities (so far).

The first self-storage facilities opened in Texas, in the United States, in the 1960s. It wasn't until the 1980s, however, that the self-storage phenomenon really took off.

Since then, the self-storage industry has continued to grow explosively, especially in America and Europe.

Now Sub-Saharan Africa is catching up – and in Mauritius, Multibox is leading the way, with self-storage facilities in Forbach, Bagatelle Mall and Bambous.

The self-storage industry, worldwide

Today, there are approximately 50 000 facilities, providing more than 174 million square metres of personal storage space, in the United States alone. That's roughly a half square metre of storage space for every US citizen!

In 2016, the industry's annual revenue in the United States was pegged at a staggering $32.7 billion.

In neighbouring Canada, there are in the region of 3,000 self-storage facilities and the self-storage industry is said to have doubled in size over the past decade or so.

The UK and European countries such as France, the Netherlands, Spain and Germany, have followed suit. In the UK, for example, an estimated 3.9 million square metres of self-storage space generated £540 million in 2016.

Sub-Saharan Africa: self-storage tipped for rapid growth

Already, South Africa's self-storage industry is worth billions. Since around 2008, its self-storage industry has ranked as the fifth largest in the world, and all signs are that it's continuing to grow.

Despite economic challenges and political headwinds, Sub-Saharan Africa boasts robust regional economies, plentiful resources and young populations that are increasingly recognised for their entrepreneurial flair.

At the start of 2017, growth across the region was better than expected, and it's thought that a boom in SMEs and startups will continue to support the growth of an increasingly urbanised middle class. In turn, the demand for affordable, accessible storage space is predicted to skyrocket.

Self-storage in Mauritius

Mauritius in particular is undergoing a period of renewal, with government repositioning it as one of Africa’s financial business hubs. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), Mauritius has the most competitive economy in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sustained development and increased support for startup companies and SMEs are driving demand for secure self-storage solutions for businesses.

At the same time, increasing property prices and greater prosperity – accompanied by more personal possessions – are driving a need for affordable storage solutions among home owners and renters.
